Cheap international calling: what to know
- Is this actually cheaper than my mobile carrier?
- For international calls, almost always. Most US carriers charge $0.20 to $1.00 per minute for international landlines, plus connection fees. We start at $0.01/min, and the exact rate depends on the destination and is shown before you dial. A 30-minute call to the UK that would run $6 to $30 on a typical mobile plan is about $0.30 here.
- Are you billing by the second or by the minute?
- By the minute, rounded up to the next whole minute. A 90-second call to the US or UK bills as 2 minutes, or about $0.02. No connection fee on top.
- Is there a monthly fee or minimum spend?
- No. There's no subscription, no monthly minimum, no "use it or lose it" expiring credit, and no minimum top-up that traps you. You buy credit once, use it whenever you need to, and walk away whenever you want. There's nothing to unsubscribe from.
- Why is VoIP so much cheaper than a traditional phone line?
- Carrier international rates are built on long-haul circuit-switched infrastructure from the 1990s, with pricing that hasn't kept pace with the technology. VoIP carries your call over the internet to a partner inside the destination country, who hands it to the recipient's network locally. That eliminates the long-haul cost almost entirely.
- Is the call quality good at these prices?
- Yes. We use HD Opus on our side and Tier 1 VoIP carriers for termination. On a normal home internet connection, the audio is typically clearer than a regular international cellular call. Quality on the recipient's end depends on their own signal. If they're on a weak 3G connection in a basement, that's the bottleneck, not us.
- Which countries can I call?
- Over 220 countries and territories, from the US, Canada, and UK to India, Mexico, the Philippines, Nigeria, Brazil, and most of Europe, Asia, Africa, and Latin America. - Will I see hidden charges on my statement?
- No. Every line on your statement is a top-up you chose: $4, $8, or $15. We don't auto-recharge unless you explicitly turn it on, and we don't tack on "regulatory recovery fees" or other carrier-style padding.
- What about 911, 112, 999, or other emergency lines?
- FreeCallMe is not an emergency calling service. We block emergency numbers because VoIP can't reliably tell dispatchers where you are. Keep a real phone available for emergencies.
- Do I have to use my free first call right away?
- No. Your free first call, up to $0.25, and any credit you top up stays on the account indefinitely. Use it today, next month, or a year from now.
- Can I trust the billing if I'm calling for hours?
- The dialer displays minutes used and remaining credit live during the call, and there's a per-call usage log in your dashboard afterward. Plus, since the call hard-stops at zero balance, the worst case is you get cut off mid-sentence, not a surprise charge.
