What is a country calling code?

A country calling code is the number you dial before a phone number to reach another country. It comes right after the + or your exit code: +1 for the US and Canada, +44 for the UK, +91 for India. It tells the phone network which country to send the call to.

How to dial an international number

Start with a + (press and hold 0 on a mobile to get one) or your country's exit code. Then dial the country code, then the local number without its leading 0. To reach a London landline from the US, for example, you'd dial 011, then 44, then 20 7946 0000.

Frequently asked questions

What is a country calling code?
It's the prefix that sends your call to a particular country. You dial it right after the + or your exit code. The US is +1, the UK is +44, India is +91.
How do I call another country?
Dial +, then the country code, then the local number with any leading 0 dropped. On a mobile, press and hold 0 to type the +.
What does the + in a phone number mean?
The + is shorthand for 'put your international exit code here.' It lets one number work from any country, so you don't have to memorize exit codes.
Is a country code the same as an area code?
No. The country code gets you to the country, and the area code gets you somewhere inside it. In +1 415 555 2671, +1 is the country code and 415 is the area code.
Which country has the code +1, +44, or +91?
+1 is the US, Canada, and parts of the Caribbean. +44 is the UK. +91 is India. Search above for any other code.
