The short answer
Zoom, Google Meet, and most platforms gate recording behind a paid plan. But your OS doesn't. Screen recording tools capture whatever is on your screen, regardless of which call app is running. No watermarks, no subscriptions, no third-party uploads required.
Video call providers use recording as a conversion lever. It's one of the most-requested features, so it makes a natural upgrade trigger. Zoom, Teams, Meet, and most modern platforms all gate it at the paid tier.
The workaround is simple: screen recording tools capture whatever is on your display, call UI, video feeds, shared screens, and all. The three methods below work with FreeCallMe, Zoom free, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams free, and any other browser-based call.
Method 1
OBS Studio
Best for: High quality recordings, regular use, streaming setup · Download: obsproject.com
Download and install OBS Studio from obsproject.com (free, no account required).
Open OBS. In the Sources panel at the bottom, click the + button.
Select "Display Capture" to capture your full screen, or "Window Capture" to capture just the browser. Give the source a name and click OK.
You should see your screen live in the preview.
Click "Start Recording" in the bottom-right Controls panel, then start or join your video call.
When done, click "Stop Recording." OBS saves the file to your Videos folder by default.
Tips
- Set output format to MP4 in Settings > Output > Recording Format for maximum compatibility.
- Use "Window Capture" to record only the browser window, not your entire desktop.
- Enable "Rescale Output" to 1080p to keep file sizes manageable.
Method 2
Windows Game Bar
Best for: Quick one-off recordings on Windows, no install needed
Open your video call in a browser (Chrome, Edge, or Firefox).
Press Windows key + G to open the Game Bar overlay.
Click the Capture widget (camera icon), or press Windows + Alt + R to start recording immediately.
A red dot appears in the top-right corner when recording is active.
When your call ends, press Windows + Alt + R again to stop.
Your recording is saved to C:\Users\[YourName]\Videos\Captures.
Tips
- If Game Bar doesn't open, go to Windows Settings > Gaming > Xbox Game Bar and confirm it's enabled.
Note: Game Bar captures one application window at a time. Open your browser first, then activate Game Bar. It may not work if your browser runs in a specific compatibility mode.
Method 3
Mac QuickTime Player
Best for: Mac users who want a simple, no-install solution
Open QuickTime Player (Spotlight: Cmd + Space, type "QuickTime").
In the menu bar, go to File > New Screen Recording.
A recording toolbar appears at the bottom. Click the dropdown next to the record button to choose your microphone input.
Click the Record button (red circle).
Click anywhere to record the full screen, or drag to select a specific region. Join or start your video call.
When done, click Stop (square icon in the menu bar) or press Cmd + Ctrl + Esc. QuickTime opens your recording automatically.
Tips
- Select your microphone in the recording toolbar to capture audio from your mic.
- On macOS Ventura and later, you can enable System Audio capture in the QuickTime recording options.

Method 4
Browser Extensions
Best for: Quick recordings without installing software
If installing software feels like too much, browser-based screen recorders work for quick recordings:
Loom Free tier. Records browser tab plus webcam, auto-uploads to cloud.
Screencastify Chrome extension. Free up to 5 minutes, easy to use.
Scrnli Free Chrome/Firefox extension. No account required for local saves.
Note: Cloud-based extensions upload your recording to their servers. For sensitive calls (medical, legal, confidential business), use local recording with OBS, QuickTime, or Game Bar instead.
Privacy and legal reminder
Before recording any call, keep these in mind:
- Inform all participants that the call is being recorded. In many regions (California, EU, and others), recording without consent is illegal.
- Check platform terms of service. Some platforms prohibit recording through third-party tools.
- Store recordings securely. Don't upload sensitive recordings to public cloud services.
A simple “Just a heads up — I'll be recording this call for my own notes” is usually sufficient and keeps everyone comfortable.
FreeCallMe + recording
FreeCallMe doesn't currently offer built-in recording (it's on the roadmap). Until native recording is available, the methods above work seamlessly. FreeCallMe runs entirely in your browser, so any screen recording tool that captures a browser window will capture your call perfectly. We'll update this guide when native recording launches.
Questions
- Can I record a FreeCallMe video call for free?
- Yes. While FreeCallMe doesn't yet have built-in recording, you can use free OS tools to record your screen during any call. On Windows, press Win+G to open Game Bar and start recording. On Mac, use QuickTime Player > New Screen Recording. On any platform, OBS Studio offers the most control and quality.
- Can I record a Zoom free call without a paid plan?
- Yes, but not through Zoom's built-in recording feature — that requires a paid plan. Instead, use your operating system's screen recorder (Windows Game Bar, Mac QuickTime) or OBS Studio. These tools record whatever is on your screen regardless of what app is running, so Zoom's paywall doesn't apply.
- Is it legal to record video calls?
- It depends on your location and whether all parties consent. In the US, federal law requires one-party consent (you can record your own calls), but some states like California require all-party consent. In the EU, GDPR requires explicit consent. Always inform participants before recording. A simple heads-up at the start of the call is sufficient in most cases.
- Does OBS Studio work for recording browser-based video calls?
- Yes. OBS Studio records your screen or a specific window, not a specific app. As long as your video call runs in a browser like Chrome or Firefox, OBS will capture it perfectly. Use "Window Capture" mode to record just the browser, or "Display Capture" to record your full screen.
- How do I record both video and audio on a free call?
- In OBS, add two audio sources: "Audio Input Capture" (your mic) and "Audio Output Capture" (your speakers or system audio). On Mac QuickTime, select your microphone in the recording toolbar — system audio capture may require macOS Ventura or a separate audio routing app. On Windows Game Bar, system audio is captured automatically.
